The Ilex x aquipernyi is a crossbreed between Ilex aquifolium and Ilex pernyi. Ilex x aquipernyi ‘Dragon Lady’ (Syn: Ilex x aquipernyi ‘Meschnick’) is a small-leaved holly, which is suitable to be cultivated as a tree for urban areas.

In winter, this high-spirited lady is very winter hardy and evergreen. The leaves of this Ilex variety are small, somewhat twisted, dark green, and have sharp spines. The new foliage has a nice, red glow. The most important advantage is the central leader that this tree builds. The final height is 5 m, with a width of a maximum of 1.5 m.

Ilex x aquipernyi ‘Dragon Lady’ is a female species. Ilex meserveae ‘Blue Stallion’ and Ilex meserveae ‘Blue Prince’ are good pollinators. After a white bloom in May, this Ilex will bear small, red berries. This does depend on possible pollinators in the vicinity. The berries provide delicious sustenance for birds. Stressed plants also bear large numbers of berries.

Because of the narrow and slow growth, this tree is very suitable for narrow streets, green areas, or planter boxes. Moreover, it deals well with air pollution.

Ilex x aquipernyi ‘Dragon Lady’ will fit urban areas very well.
