Nyssa sylvatica ‘Wildfire’ is relatively unknown, even though it has so much to offer! This tree is a true insect hotel; in spring, bees buzz among the inconspicuous green/white flowers. After that, it is a joy for birds, who love feasting on the small, blue berries. The young, red leaves, which contrast with the older, dark-green leaves, hold their ground from spring to autumn, after which a show of brilliant autumn colouration begins. The Nyssa has a beautifully-coloured glow at various moments.

Nyssa naturally occurs in eastern North America. There, the trees can reach heights of 20 m, while the Nyssa sylvatica ‘Wildfire’ stays considerably lower, about 12-15 m. In its youth, the Nyssa has a beautiful pyramidal habit. Later on, the crown is wider and more ovoid. It differs from the species in that it is narrower.

Location-wise, Nyssa sylvatica ‘Wildfire’ is easily pleased. It can handle both wet and dry environments. Pavements are not the greatest plan, but the Nyssa will really find its place in a park or open and wide green verge.

A true tree of the future, which definitely deserves a spot in public green spaces!
