The Parrotia persica ‘Columella’ was selected in 2005 by Tree Nursery Pasquali (Italy). Originally, the Parrotia grows as a bush-like, wide tree, with multiple, heavy main branches. This selection has a narrow, upward, oval crown and stays smaller than the rest of the species, with a final height of 7 to 8 metres. The crown is more closed than the ‘Vanessa’.

The leaves have a reversed ovoid shape and are deep green and shiny in summer. In spring, the leaves develop red edges. It is unsurprising that the leaf shape is comparable to that of the witch hazel (Hamamelis) because it is also part of the Hamamelidaceae family. The small, red, bulbous flowers bloom on the bare wood at the end of February and in May. You may miss the bloom, but when you do pay attention, it is a fantastic sight to see. The flowers also resemble those of the hazel. In autumn, on the other hand, you cannot miss the Parrotia persica ‘Columella’. The beautiful autumn colouration stands out; it flows from yellow to scarlet. The colour transition is clearly visible on the leaves.

Parrotia persica ‘Columella’ is very suitable for narrow streets and parks, and has year-round decorative value. We have never observed any disease or insect problems with Parrotia, and literature suggests that it is a vermin-free tree. A very clean, and super-healthy tree. A beautiful addition to public greenery.

With its magnificent autumn colouration, the Parrotia persica 'Columella' is a true eye-catcher for public green spaces.
