This American selection by Frank Schmidt, Quercus x warei 'Regal Prince', is a crossbreed between Quercus robur ‘Fastigiata’ and Quercus bicolor. The beautiful, dark-green leaves have a leathery appearance. Because the branches grow straight upwards, the grey, felt-like bottom side of the leaves is clearly visible.

The leaves are a reverse ovoid shape, and clearly larger than those of the common oak Quercus robur. In autumn, the leaves turn golden yellow and brown later on. The leaves stay on the tree in their dehydrated state for a long time. The trunk differs in colour and has prominent fissures. The habit is narrow, and narrow oval when maturing. The branches grow straight upwards, which results in a dense crown. The young twigs are greyish brown. The ‘Regal Prince’ grows to a height of about 15 metres, and stays about 6 metres in width.

The Quercus robur ‘Regal Prince’ prefers faintly acidic, permeable soil, but it can adapt to a wide range of soil conditions: it can handle both dry and humid soil. On top of that, this oak is mildew resistant and winter hardy. Because of the sturdy leaves, it is very wind resistant, and suitable to be planted near the coast.

Quercus x warei 'Regal Prince' is a good solution for narrow streets, small gardens, or a beautiful, prominent tree row.
