Zelkova serrata, a 10-12 m tall tree with a short trunk and a loose, wide oblate round crown. Inclining to horizontally spreading branches and twigs. Twigs more or less shiny auburn. Bark peels off in small plates at a later age. Long ovoid leaf, 3-7 cm, with a blunt, serrated leaf margin. Inconspicuous flowers and fruits. Requires fertile, humus-rich,
loamy sandy soils, then shows reasonably fast growth. Endures pavement, but generally the crown is too low and too widely spreading in order to plant it along roads. It is, however, an attractive avenue tree when planted in the middle of wide green banks and verges. Rather sensitive to wind. In addition, an attractive park tree, both as a specimen tree or planted in small groups.
