Acer freemanii ‘Armstrong Two’ is a hybrid of Acer rubrum and Acer saccharinum. It combines the positive characteristics of both parents; the vigour of Acer saccharinum and the beautiful, exuberant autumn colouration of Acer rubrum. Maple trees are often picked for their decorative foliage, and the autumn colour of the ‘Armstrong Two’ truly stands out.

Acer freemanii ‘Armstrong Two’ is an improvement of Acer freemanii ‘Armstrong’. This fast-growing cultivar stays more narrow and eventually forms a reasonably thinly branching, upright, columnar crown. The foliage is light green, with a slightly bluish tint at the bottom. The autumn colour is orange/red, which becomes even more intense after hot summers when more sugar has been produced in the leaves. It blooms with red flowers in March-April. This cultivar does not produce fruits/seeds. Reproduction happens by means of shoots, due to delayed incompatibility in grafted specimens.

The final height is 12-14 m, with a narrow crown of up to 3.5 m wide. Acer freemanii ‘Armstrong Two’ has wide and shallow roots. The tree can handle pavements, but it does not like calcareous soils. Even though this Acer is wind resistant, it doesn't like sea breezes very much.

These characteristics make it a good avenue tree for narrow street profiles.
